Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Brings Acclaimed Guitarist to Jamestown

A man who’s been called one of the most unique and humorous performers in the contemporary acoustic scene will be coming to Jamestown the first week of October. Richard is traveling to Jamestown from Florida, having just returned from a tour in Tasmania and New Zealand!
Gilewitz regularly fascinates his audiences with finger-style gymnastics while spinning yarns too unbelievable not to be true. His rousing performances are filled with amazing chops, humor, and a history of the acoustic guitar from blues to folk, traditional to classical and somewhere in between. His use of banjo style picking patterns, classical arpeggios, tapping and harmonics, as well as a rhythmic and percussive approach, bring a fresh impression to the listener. Richard is respected worldwide for his command of the 6 and 12-string guitar. Whether playing solo, conducting guitar seminars and school programs, or sharing the stage with fellow performers, Richard Gilewitz always creates a sparkle of mood mastery and wonderment.
Mr. Gilewitz will be holding the following  workshops/performances at Infinity.
Wednesday, October 5: Rhythm Studies - 4:00pm -- The Fingerpicking Engine - 5:00pm -- Why the Toys? Lecture on Guitar Accessories - 7:00pm
Thursday, October 6:The Tips for Touring - 4:00pm--Concert/Seminar with Jim Holler and Bill Ward @ Trinity Guitar Shop-7:00pm
Friday October 7: Open Turnings & Slide Guitar- 4:00pm
Concert/Seminar at Infinity Cafe- 7:00pm

Curtain Set to Rise on a New Facet of the Arts at the Infinity Center

Infinity staffer Heather Ullman with one of the puppets
The curtain is set to rise on a new facet of the arts at the Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Center! Beginning in July, Infinity will add a theater arts, drama, and puppetry component to its menu of offerings.

“We are collaborating with Matt Hamilton-Kraft (Chautauqua Opportunities, Inc.) to develop a student-run Infinity Theater Company,” said Shane Hawkins, Infinity's Executive Director.

"COI has a strong focus on developing entrepreneurship skills in the youth they work with; Infinity provides a unique setting to develop these business skills in a supportive, creative and engaging environment. Students will be involved in everything from making the puppets and sets, to script writing, performing and booking the Company when they are ready to perform. We're very excited to watch this idea finally take shape and become a reality."

Infinity Q and A: Jeff Erickson

"Infinity Q & A" is a regular, recurring series featuring various staff members and Instructors at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts. Today we feature Jeff Erickson, local musician and Facilities Director of the Reg Lenna Civic Center.

Interior of the Reg Lenna Civic Center
How do you feel about Infinity moving its showcase back to the Reg Lenna for this year's showcase?

We here at the Reg are thrilled to have the showcase back. It is a great thing to have all of the Infinity students rockin the theater!

What's the most important thing that Infinity students can learn from performing in a show of this size?

Students should use the opportunity at the Reg to see how a professional venue runs a concert. It can be a lot of work to put on a show and I imagine some of the students don't realize that. They should watch what the crew is doing and feel free to ask questions.

Infinity Q and A: T.R. McKotch

"Infinity Q & A" is a regular, recurring series featuring various staff members and Instructors at Infinity Visual and Performing Arts. Today we feature T.R. McKotch, an Infinity Drum Instructor and one of the directors for the Collective Groove Ensemble.

Infinity Instructor T.R. McKotch
What is your favorite part of Infinity?
My favorite part of Infinity is watching the kids progress into the accomplished musicians that they have become. There are a lot of fantastic local musicians that have come out of this program.

Through your experiences teaching at Infinity what have you learned from your students?
I learned to always be on top of my game! I have to be up to date on the latest music, the latest trends and even new ways of reading music. I remember when a student first brought me drum tabs. It was like I was living in an alternate dimension! I had no clue what to do with them but I went home, studied them and learned all I could about them. Experiences like that really help to keep me on top of the ways that I teach!

What are you looking most forward to from Infinity's Annual Spring Showcase?
I love to see all the hard work that the kids have put in throughout year. The showcase really allows them to put that into action. It's their opportunity to shine.

Do you have a quote or any words of advice for current Infinity students?
Always practice and come to class prepared, and you'll go far!

-Stephanie Rogers
